Honestly, it’s the simple things

Wednesday Mornings are my favourite morning of the week.

No alarm is set. We have a lie-in. No timelines, no pressure, just time to ourselves.

I work evenings and weekends, so I don’t feel guilty about this. We’ve carved out a slow start on a Wednesday, purposefully.

One of us gets up to make the coffee and feed the cat. The coffee is drunk in bed, and we talk. We listen to the news headlines and often discuss them. We just talk... bliss.

This morning, I popped a couple of pieces of bread in the toaster and got the butter and honey out of the cupboard. The smell of the toasting bread reached my other half... so I put some more bread in the toaster. She added some raspberries to hers and we ate... by the back door... with the sun on our faces... soaking it up and enjoying the dopamine release.

It’s all about recognising these simple pleasures.

Some Wednesdays won’t be like that.

The sun may not be shining.

There may not be any bread in the house.

A work commitment may have prevented our typical Wednesday from happening.

So, when it does happen, I try and remember to appreciate it.

Other simple pleasures from this morning

The cat was scooping her food from her bowl and eaten it off the floor. We chuckled - Simple pleasure.

My partner said she was going to strip the bed. I told her I’d already done it. She was happy and we hugged – Simple pleasure.

We both appreciate the position we’re in and try not to take it for granted. Other households won’t have been so calm this morning, certainly not the ones with children in them!

Recognising those simple pleasures and appreciating them is Happiness.

Even as a single man, I learned to carve out routines that brought me joy. You don’t need someone else to make you happy. They can add to the joy, but you need to find your happiness first. After all, Happiness is attractive.
